Emotional Clutter

Sometimes it's not the stuff in our homes that's the only thing holding us back. Sometimes it's the stories we tell ourselves, the baggage we carry and the expectations we have. These things can be clutter, too, so Bec and Tara are going to have a chat about it and give you some tips on decluttering from an emotional perspective.

Show notes:

What is emotional clutter?

  • Thoughts

  • Ideas

  • Feelings

  • Personally justified patterns of behaviour THAT DON’T SERVE YOU

What is it not:

  • Trauma

  • PTSD

  • Anxiety

What might emotional clutter look like?

  • Phrases/ scripts that roll through your mind which aren’t factual

  • Negative self-talk

  • Feelings and behaviour/ actions brought about by your thoughts (think-feel-act)

  • Expectations of others

Brain plasticity or neuroplasticity - is the ability of the brain to change continuously throughout an individual's life via synaptic pruning (which is about deleting the old neural connections that are no longer necessary or useful, and creating new and strengthening the necessary ones).

What this means is that we CAN CHANGE OUR THOUGHTS  (no matter how ingrained they seem) and rid ourselves of the emotional clutter.

  • Question your thoughts

  • Start pivoting those thoughts and repeat them when the old ones occur

  • Get clear on your values and make sure you are living in alignment with them

  • Steer clear of people that give oxygen to your emotional clutter.

  • Don’t forget to make time for caring for yourself.

  • Let go

  • Practice gratitude

  • Be present

  • Focus on yourself only

Blame and expectations - the rowboat metaphor

Emotional clutter can be removed from your life:

  1. Question your thoughts and behaviours that are not serving you and replace them over time with ones that do

  2. Surround yourself with people that support the new thoughts and behaviours

  3. Put a full stop on things

  4. Control what you can control

  5. Watch your expectations of others
